The idea of coordination among the Arab Development Funds was broached in 1974 out of the need for consultation to make the best use of their resources and to improve the efficiency of aid. At the initiative of Kuwait Fund, representatives of Abu Dhabi Fund, the Arab Fund, and Kuwait Fund met in Kuwait on 24/2/1974 to discuss the ways and means of enhancing cooperation among these institutions.

The first formal coordination meeting took place on 20/9/1975 at the invitation of Kuwait Fund, and was attended by the directors of operations of Abu Dhabi Fund, the Saudi Fund, the Arab Fund and Kuwait Fund. The meeting discussed the co-financing development projects in beneficiary countries. The participants agreed to hold two meetings annually at the level of directors of operations, and periodic meetings at the level of heads of the institutions whenever the need arises. A Coordination Secretariat was set up, and its activities were entrusted to the Arab Fund to organize the meetings for exchanging views and discussing policies and procedures in order to promote coordination among the members of the Group and to increase the effectiveness of their financing operations.

The Coordination Group consists of 8 Institutions, 5 of which are Multilateral Aid Institutions as follows:
